It's perfectly fine. Even in country where bears are a problem you just use bear bags or boxes to store your food at night. Black bears are super skittish and will run away from you, though they may want to get into human trash. Grizzly bears will try to avoid people all together. Carry bear spray and make noise when you're going a round a bend in the trail. Surprising a bear is the worst thing you can do.
