Going to a non-touristy island in Greece for 2.5 months, to see if the homestead life is for me. Been there a couple times since my grandparents live there, but never this long and with this mindset.
I'm a junior in college in the US and this is the last Summer I think I'll get fully off.
Been thinking a lot about homesteading and I want to see after a full summer's work if I've just been romanticising the whole thing, or if it's something I really want to do; as a lifestyle.
Already have a list of things I'm going to do:
>buy and raise 1 sheep
>butcher it cleanly, learn how to properly cut clean meat cuts, use every single part of the animal for a different food product (blood sausage, etc.)
>fish (normal and spearfish) everyday; prepare them with many different methods: smoked, salt cured, etc.
>do back-breaking garden, waking up at (~5:30am) work since my grandpa is getting too old to do it now
>collect salt from the sea
>make a bunch of cheese
>collect and preserve a fuck ton of figs, pine nuts
>try to make olive oil
>catch and make octopus carpaccio
Would appreciate it if any anons have any ideas I can add. I want to work my ass off, and really get a crash-course feeling of how I'de enjoy this long term.
pic related, basically where I'll be staying.
