The proposed pipeline would run from the Bakken oil fields in western North Dakota to southern Illinois, crossing beneath the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as well as part of Lake Oahe near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Except for the addition of land in Iowa, the route is almost identical to that of the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, which was defeated by activists and vetoed by President Barack Obama.
