It's not just in case you come across an aggressive boar, black bear (black bear's being statistically more likely to attack people), or moose, or cougar. Sometime the issue is what kind of people you might meet out there.
We have a lot of issues with poaching and meth production in my neck of the woods of Montana and I know of people who have been shot at over these issues. Also the main reason why animal attacks are so rare is because most people are not venturing into actually wild territory. You're a lot lore likely to die of getting lost or falling , but even when I'm not hunting I'm going to be taking my revolver with me and some bear mace.
