For those interested in farming but haven't been exposed to the realities, you can join a Crop Mob to help out on a local farm. Not only will you get a taste of what work is done on a farm, you'll get to know farmers first hand who you can learn from.
http://cropmob.org/Also check for farm festivals. These tend to be much less hands on but still will give you a look at a local farm or two. We used to have one called 'Field of Greens' that was half farm demonstration and half cooking by local chefs using local farm products.
