I've had to kick a red tailed hawk off one of my chickens before, saving the chicken (pic related, it is sitting ON the chicken in this image). I lost a few chickens to hawks like this until I installed hawk hides for the chickens to run under. I haven't lost a single one since then. I didn't hurt the hawk when I kicked it. I only kicked it hard enough to move it off and release the chicken.
