Aletris farinosa
Uses: Cherokee used root tea as tonic for fevers, to strengthen stomach and womb; for coughs, lung conditions, rheumatism, jaundice, colic and painful urination. Micmac and Rappahannock people used root and plant infusions to treat menstrual disorders. Root decoction used as bitter tonic for indigestion. Promotes appetite, treats diarrhea and labor pains. Used for colic but small doses may hypogastric colic. Tincture used for rheumatism. Contains diosgenin, which has both anti-inflammatory and estrogenic properties. Intensity bitter resinous root more soluble in alcohol than in water.
