I've always wanted to comment on this thread, what a legend.
I like going on road trips a lot and have always enjoyed them. In retrospective I just wished that I had done more road trips desu by buying a car. Back then I wanted to buy a BMW 635 when tey were cheap but I never went on with it. Seriously, when you are young get a car (or at least a bicycle if you can't afford a car) that allows you to travel.
So far I have done roadtrips in the US (LA->Las Vegas->Southwestern National Parks->Las Vegas in an RV with the family - had its good and bad sides, wouldn't do it again that way), in Southeast Asia and in parts of Europe.
I would not recommend taking an RV at all, it's too expensive and limiting due to logistics. Get a car where you can sleep inside, where you can take as many roads as possible etc.
Packing wise: Don't compromise on sleeping comfort and have good camping chairs with you. You don't need a lot of kitchen equipment. Pack your car by 2/3 at maximum and every box by 2/3 at maximum as well, so that you can get everything quickly as well and don't lose time while looking for stuff or while rearanging the stuff to get the lid closed.
I would love to do a roadtrip in India, exploring the whole country.
