For any dangerous wildlife it's important to not startle them, and to give them space and an escape route. If you're going to be running, you might want to have a noisemaker on you (bear bell, jingling keychain, etc). And then of course if you do see an animal you back away without turning your back, no running, and no direct eye contact.
If we use our heads and act responsibly nobody needs to get hurt.
