The desert states aren't just flat expanses of sand, there are varied elevations, climates, and ecosystems across the West. There are mountains to climb or ski in the winter, trails to hike and bike, tons of off roading options, there are lakes and rivers to boat/kayak/fish in. Most importantly though somethings like 75% of all land in the desert states is federally owned and managed so dispersed camping is allowed virtually everywhere. It's how most /out/ists wish their forests were managed.
