While I would agree that a DSLR is definitely going to give you the best image if you’re willing to commit to the price, pack size and weight, those saying point-and-shoots aren’t much better than smartphones have no idea what they’re talking about. The right point-and-shoot in the right hands can take as good an image as any mid-range DSLR at a tiny fraction of the size and weight. The big difference is pretty much all point-and-shoots are fixed wide-angle, so if you want to shoot animals or distant subjects you obviously need a DSLR.
I normally use a 4x5 but always keep a Ricoh GRII handy for backup and for something the size of your phone it’s a phenomenal camera, pic related.
