What you've described is the problem of alienation, and that seems to be a huge factor. Marx wrote on the subject, though a different context, so don't worry, you are on a very good track with that!
Social impositions have been turned into a surrounding in itself, alienating us from nature, and in turn ourselves, and we are even not aware of it.
