You're expected to leave gifts as thanks. If you're lucky they may give you some home made yogurt, kaffir, cheese, or my favorite, arkhi, which is a fermented milk vodka that was unlike any alcohol I've ever had before. It was delicious.
Since my Dad is a bit older, doing a full solo trek wasnt really in the cards, but it's definitely on my bucket list. Also, I came back with a Mogolian deel, which is like a traditional robe/long coat, and man is it comfy. Here's a photo of the first place we stayed.
