there are plenty of claim owners out there that will let guys like OP hand mine for a cut of what they find or for assessment work to keep the claims in good standing, so he could go get some gold and have fun digging holes out in the bush but if hes hoping to become a millionare at prospecting hes in for a real wakeup call. Placer mining by hand is a LOT of hard work.

yes i ve looked I think 3 times with local friends, twice by helicopter and once on foot. Its incredibly tough country to try and hike in, and weather can change without warning in those coast peaks.
We did find gold but not what was described by by the stories. mostly flower gold in small streams that appeared and disappeared at random with no real cause it seemed. I ve been to the approximate spot of Volcanic Browns camp but didnt find much there either. If the spot was a mine it has likely been wiped out by land slides or changing land features. The box canyon mentioned by Jaxon could match any number of locations up in those mountains. I do recall though we found a miners pick and a decomposed backpack, but that was from the late 60s not from the turn of the century.

i am pretty sure in California you need a claim now to use a stream sluice, they dont want sediments going in and muddying up the water. A rocker box would probably be better for his location anyway.

if you do it right without dumping the tailings in a river, hydraulic mining makes perfect sense and doesnt do much serious harm that cant be undone with tree planting. The only reason it was banned back in the day in california was because it made a huge mess for ranchers and fishermen. If you do it properly with a settling pond and an excavator scooping out your sediment it works great. Also see above pic, ground sluicing works great for the small scale miner.

Yes people have said both to me that the back and front of boulders carry good gold, but i think it depends on the specific current your dealing with at each spot. Also yes thats a Rocker Box, I build dozens of them and stash them for later on different spots, the old tech works great if you know how to use it right.
