The most important part of dog hiking is to get a pack that fits well, aka does not rest on the back like the one pictured. That's a terrible pack, and to not overload it. Start small with treats and stuff and then progress. My dog carries a couple of days worth of food in her pack, some water for herself, some treats, and her supplies (blanket and water/food dish.)
