wild camped when alone (actually legal in a lot of places, like most parks etc or 500m from any road. Just don't litter)
and stayed in DOC huts when it got colder and I did longer trips where I didn't wanna carry a tent.
Be smart and buy a full/half year ticket for huts (they work for Great Walks only during Off-season, but I recommend only going then anyway) the day you enter, I got it half way through.
