I travel central Australia year-round. It’s not unusual for me to drive 10,000kms per month. This week I looped the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track and Coober Pedy before ending up in Andamooka.
People who complain about the heat and isolation are piss weak. These things are part of what makes it all feel like adventure, to me. Summer is the best time to travel the outback because you don’t have to deal with tourists - or anyone, for that matter.
Australia being dangerous is a meme. You can swim with freshwater crocs no problem and our most venomous animals will leave you alone as long as you leave them alone. In the top end, don’t go near the water - simple. I’d rather deal with a dingo than a bear.
It’s only dangerous when you’re underprepared. The track to Halligan Bay on Lake Eyre is closed during summer because a fuckwit tourist died out there. They hired a 4WD and got it bogged in the salt crust, then one of them died trying to walk to William Creek in the summer heat. Police had the 4WD unbogged in minutes after dropping psi and engaging lockers. Many such cases.
