As for the straps, yeah they totally suck ass with a heavy weight(Come at me surplus international defense force. I had enough marches with bloody shoulders). I wouldn't recommend to tinker with them. If some of the straps rip while you're hiking... oh boy. You could buy it together with the BW folding mat. The rucksack has a special compartment for it at the back, which will increase the comfort. Honestly, you're better off with something other than that, if it's not too expensive. I spended a lot of money on expensive shit I thought would come in handy, but ended up gathering dust in the closet.
So, look for something decent and not too expensive with at least some padding on the straps or grit your teeth if you are going to pack heavy.
