>>344564Well here's the last axe I made. The axe head was off a rusted out old axe in my dad's wood shed at the cabin which I restored.
I am experimenting with the wood type on this handle (cherry). If it breaks early on, I'll make a new one. I roughly traced out the general shape of the handle and added a little more meat towards the head than the last one and a little more curve towards the end, which makes it swing a little better for me.
Obviously I'm not felling entire trees with the thing, and in reality I mostly end up just using it for pounding felling wedges or putting a wedge in a bigger log to keep it from pinching the saw.
Anyone looking to make one, it's not too hard. This one was carved and sanded in an afternoon, in between treating the rust on the old head. Just get yourself a good drawshave and a spokeshave.
My next axe is my dad's old hewing axe, which will be a little harder to make a handle for, but it's a fun little hobby to have when I have the free time.
