They'll help fix nitrogen in the soil, the roots will start breaking things up and you'll probably still get a decent crop in your zone even planting that late. After they die back don't pull them just cut at ground level to leave the roots and just drop the dead plants on top.
This morning's harvest. Berry season is in full swing. Black caps and regular red raspberries are going bonkers with the everbearing just about to start. Currants are about at their peak, a few still ripening but more that we still have to get to. The first handful of boysenberries has arrived which is exciting and gooseberry and blackberries will be starting in about a week. Golly I love this time of year.
