Small scale tent camping in a camping park sucks. You are packed like sardines. Everyone of the regulars just waits for you to break some the rule. Did it once, couldn't enjoy it, so i'll never do it again.
Nothing wrong with just pitching your tent where you want, if you LNT.
They will fine you good if you do it in some nature reserve, regardless of how less of an impact you had, so you have to make sure to pitch after dark.
I guess with cheap IR observation this will not work that well in the future. Better parks will just rent some kind of service that uses one of the many commercial IR satttelites that alerts them if there is some kind of camper on their turf.
