>Before sewing machinesSewing a leather garment is not easier than a wool garment. Rather the opposite.
>barbaric races used mostly leatherNot even a real description. Primitive cultures without wool production or trade wore furs for lack of alternatives. "Barbarians" like the celts, germans, vikings wore...a lot of wool, and not a lot of fur.
>why it was cheaperOnly in a place with lots of game, think frontier america. Otherwise, wool is far cheaper. You can shear a sheep 10 times in its life, you can skin it once.
>you don't want it to insulate>suffering from hypothermiaAre you actually THINKING here?
>you want to not get rained onYes. Wool is excellent for this, it is water repellent. Leather soaks, gets even more heavy than it already is, never dries and breaks.
>Cloth was colder a thing to wear as it let air get throughDifferentiate here please. In most temperate climates, felted wool is sufficiently windproof and was usually used. In very cold climates, fur was common. It is warmer, but heavier, deals less well with water, is less breathable, and as I stated before, far more expensive.
>Eskimo gearProving my point: Gear for one of the coldest climates on earth, made by a culture that had lots of furs but no wool available. Of course they wore furs.
