Old handheld's an FT60

In the truck I've got a FT8800

>My budget is 1kPretty healthy budget tbh, my 7550 ran me about that much with radio/shipping/software/accy's. For an analog mobile, $1k will get you a lot of radio.
>>586480>resources on directional antennas>resources onantennasTher'es a ton of info on teh interwebz, including a lot of DIY stuff. People have worked satellites/ISS with 5W handhelds.
DMR + Directional antenna isn't really a thing... nor is it something that really suits my needs. I go with the stubby antennas since they fit in a pack better.... i'm not about to strap a big-ass high-gain directional antenna on my pack when I ride.
>>586481>drone with a slick lineDoable, but I've never heard of anyone doing it. I'm not big in the HF circles anyways (don't even have an HF rig), so i'm probably the wrong one to ask. Slingshot+fishing line works, attach wire to fishing line, and pull it over the tree/whatever. Invest in a tuner if you're throwing up wire antennas.
>>586481>and hover while succesfully transmittingQRP, *maybe*... HF >100W, no way. Probably fuck up the electronics in the drone real quick doing that.
"best radio" really depends on your use case and what you want to do on-air. Are you OK packing a motorcycle or car battery along with a bunch of antenna equipment? Or is a little handheld programmed with local repeaters sufficient?
