I use straw to do so, but there are other materials that'll do the job just as well. To keep the birds at bay I use some bend fencing wire and it does the trick most of the time.
I rarely use chemicals (last time was many years ago) and none at all on my strawberries. I guesstimate I lose about 5 to 10% to other hungry garden dwellers or disease, which I find an acceptable loss.
