Nothing wrong with Roughing it to Smooth it, as long as you recognize the limitations. I'm not going /out/ without my phone, but I recognize the attraction to old-world setups. As
>>479554 has said, a lot of older gear is just as effective as their modern counterparts. You lose a lot of modern technology of course, and sometimes you'll run into differences in prices. A Duluth pack is damn expensive, same with a 100% wool blanket. But so is a true MSS sleep system, or most quality sleeping bags. I find myself mixing a lot of things with surplus, old world, and some modern equipment like ferro rods, lighters, my phone etc.
