Look at GVWR, usually printed on the sticker inside the drivers door. That's the maximum weight the car can haul... people, gear, and trailer tongue weight.
What kind of terrain? Mountains? Highway? Around town? What elevations?
Mountains, you need engine and brakes. No getting around it.
Highway, more on engine, less on brakes.
Quick trips around town (<100mi), give it a shot unless you're obviously underpowered.
Higher elevation, N/A engines lose power... keep that in mind. Boost helps here.
My old half-ton had the engine to get things done (It was slow-going up w mountains), but the worst part about it was the brakes. Truck's brakes were underpowered for the weight of the truck+trailer. Needed a brake job about every oil change when I was pulling regularly. Bigger vehicle doesn't have that problem, and gets the whole rig up to speed and holds that speed up the mountains quite well.
Spend some $$ on a good proportional brake controller, if your trailer's got electric brakes. Tekonsha's about the only brand I'll buy.
Or get a light(er) trailer.
Truthfully, I have no idea what a typical pop-up camper weighs, but a mid-size V6 should be able to get things done.
>Other than get a larger car.I'll tell you from first-hand experience, I waited way too long to get a bigger truck.
