>>2041227>first time aloneTell someone where you're going. Tell someone when you plan to be back. Tell them to call the cops to come find you if you're not back by a certain time. Check the weather before you go.
Things to bring:
>first aid kit; a REAL first aid kit, not that bullshit that soccer moms keep in the van that just has bandaids and neosporin in it; you need an ACE bandage for sprained ankles, a couple of instant ice packs, burn cream, gauze, bandages, quick-clot, etc.>learn how to use everything in that kit>have one or more signaling devices, such as a colored smoke signal, flare gun, signal mirror, whistle, air horn, colored square to lay out for helicopters to see; have at least one audible and one visible signal, you can get all of these and more at an outdoor store like Academy, Dick's, or Bass Pro Shop>wear long-sleeves; yes, it's hot, but you want to keep the sun off of you; you need a long-sleeved, light-colored shirt, a hat (ballcap at least, boonie hat is even better), and sunglasses for during the day>it gets cold in the desert at night; bring appropriate clothing and bedding>bring double the water you think you'll need>individually packaged pickles are your friend when you've been sweating all day; drink the juice, then eat the pickle>do some research on the area and its weather; what is the temperature usually like during the day? What is the temperature usually like at night?>check the weather forecast before you go; rain in the desert means flashfloods>bring a walking stick and watch for snakes; don't bother buying a snake bite kit at the store, those are fucking useless; look up first aid for snake bites instead and have a way to get help>bring a map and compass, and know how to use both; don't rely on your phone for navigation or to call for help>an ALICE pack is an excellent backpack for camping, hiking, and survival; medium size will probably be enough for you, but large is great for carrying massive quantities of gear
