What I do is mark 4 inch lines on the pipes where I want the holes to be. I have them 4 inches apart from each other too. At each end of the line I drill a hole then I cut the line itself. I use a heat gun to heat up the upper section and a little of the lower section above/below the line. After that I show a glass soda bottle or piece of wood into the slit to widen it out.
That's what you see here in this image. The soil gets tossed in, watered down (it settles some so add more soil after watering) then I plant seeds or plants in the exposed soil. Crops just grow normally from there.
