I've been on a semi-sustenance kick the last couple of years where I've been growing and storing staple crops, over time slowly growing bigger and bigger percentages of my own calories. It started when I wondered how I'd fare in case of actual supply shortages more impactful than "oh shit someone bought all the toilet paper," and since then I've realized that I actually had more fun growing taters, legumes, and grains than I did growing tomatoes and greens. I'm not dumb enough to think I can grow all the food I need to survive in my shitty backyard but it's still neat taking a chunk out of my caloric needs with a bunch of potatoes and beans.
I don't really have a point to this other than maybe suggesting everybody toss beans/peas/grains in unused areas of your garden and seeing what happens. There's something really satisfying about eating pancakes made from your own homegrown wheat or sorghum, also my monkey brain is super into all the pretty colors and patterns beans come in. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
