It causes silting of water ways, flooding issues, and of course lots of pollution from things once locked away deep underground. Places near it have higher instances of cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, pulmonary disease, and birth defects. It is both air and water pollution.
Not that it matters. The companies are so oily that you can't ever pin blame on their owners and make it stick.
