Dogs have been companions since domestication and mostly had tasks to do - be it hunting, guarding or more recently ("recently" since ~200 AD lol) 'table dogs' and the like. Those tasks being disconnected from the specific breeds is only a sign of the times. Most breeds had a specific purpose, and sometimes that purpose falls out of use (e.g. the Dachshund).
