Done a little mine exploring in AZ myself. Don't plan on doing any more. This picture was of my buddy (left) and I (right) standing approximately 1 mile directly into the mine. Nearly the whole thing was flooded with a small amount of water, until deeper in, where it somewhat ceased. We soon found out that the water was coming from a dam that had been created (unintentionally) by blasted material in an attempt to seal off the shaft. The water was a good 3 or 3-1/2 ft deep, and extended further than we could see, which would've been 40+ yards. If this broke, we would've been screwed. The mine extended further in, but this is as far as we were willing to go. I would not recommend doing anything like it, because there is dangerous bacteria, asbestos, poison hazard (depending on what was mined in there), gas hazards, flooding hazards, and the ever-present collapse threat. Quite frankly, it's not worth the risk. Adventurous, yes. Smart, no way.
If you don't believe the depth of the mine, look up Senator Mine in AZ.
