Same with boots and socks. I recommend camping not too far from your car so you can always go start the car if you need to quit and get warm for whatever reason.
You likely don't have enough blankets or a proper tent, unless it is 4 season gear. Most gear is summer or 3 season.
Another thing is that when you are hiking you want to move at just the right speed. Too slow and you won't make enough heat. Too fast and you will sweat a lot and soak your gear which may freeze solid.
