You can use any style of compass if you're just going for a weekend out within reason (aside from those keychain ones you get from cereal boxed). If you're planning to go off the trail for long distances for a long period though, I prefer a mirrored compass. They're pretty accurate and fits in a pocket better than those round ones with the foldout sight. You also have the luxury of having a mirror. Also, see if you can get your hands on one that measures in mils instead of degrees. They're more accurate since mils go from 0-6400 instead of 0-360. it's also a little easier to use with a map. This is just what I taught to use though, so there might be some advantages the round ones have that I don't know about.
