I wonder a lot about the same thing, and we had the same debate last year.
My conclusion is :
- My Salomon trail running shoes are good, dry quick, light, with a good sole, and comfy. But I feel uncomfortable using them in tall grass, mud, rocky trail or any wet situation.
- My Meindl Borneo 2 MFS are also comfy as fuck, with a good sole, very durable, they resist to watter for a day, they protect my ankle.
- So when I have to walk in wet condition, hard terrain, tall grass, wild place, I will prefer my boots. If the trail is easy, if I want to go fast, i'll consider using my trail running shoes.
