With just keeping 10 hen and a rooster you can have few eggs daily because hen don't lay egg every day. They will still lay eggs without a rooster but less. Rooster is also great for protection, some can even kill smaller birds of prey going for the hens. What you do is kill older hens who already declined in number of eggs. They don't taste so good but it's not wasteful this way. Then you just let your best hen to have a chick by just not collecting one egg. It won't be impregnated without rooster. If you get rooster you sell it to some other farmer to avoid incest, and you get rooster in the same manner, from furher away farm. You put ping pong balls in the nests so hens can cosplay sitting, again helps with number of eggs produced. You feed them food scraps from your kitchen so they don't get wasted. You will need additonal grain for them, especially for winter. FEED THE EGGSHELS BACK TO THEM. This is how they naturally replenish calcium needed to build next eggs. Letting them roam free also keep them healthier and fed as they look for earthworms and insects. But this way you would lose one a year to animals/wehicles. Hens are the dumbest, and yes they run and cacle with their heads cut off.
