It is very fun, but yes, there is alot of $ in the hobby. And part of what makes it fun is the danger. You could fall off, get bucked off, horse slips and fall, getting kicked by a poorly trained horse, etc. I love it. I love the culture of it as well.
My buddie was a wrangler out west and did guided rides in a nat. park. He never was injured but there were a couple people who were. Don't be afraid to try it. There are alot more dangerous activities than riding.
