Here's my girl Macie running on the beach. She's a standard poodle. I've taken her back-country skiing, duck hunting, winter camping, ice fishing, you name it. She can lie in the snow for hours despite her short coat, and is definitely the clod hardiest dog I've ever owned. Plus, she's a real sweetheart and keeps me warm at night when we're out in the snow.
Standard Poodles were bred as hunting dogs / bird dogs, and to swim in very cold water in the swamps of germany / france. Plus they're smart as hell. I recommend the royal standard as opposed to the regal standard sub-breed. Royals are larger, faster, and generally hardier dogs. It's funny how poodles are usually stigmatized as a prissy show dogs, when they were originally bred to be incredible hunting dogs. They can live on average to be 16 or so years old and due to the low popularity of the breed, inbreeding and genetically caused diseases are very uncommon.
Also, recue one if you can.
