Canal boating is something you can only really do in the UK. It is an experience you will never get anywhere else. I forever see rich American tourists hiring boats for tours of the canals and they all love it.
Would definitely recommend renting one for a few weeks before buying. It is a significant investment and you should know what you are getting into, some people love it and others hate it.
Make sure you get any boat you are thinking of buying professionally looked at. The engine and electrics should be in good condition at least.

Owning a boat instead of a house is cheap. The main expense of a boat is mooring fees but in the UK you can park on any canal for upto two days for free. And a steel hulled boat in a fresh water canal barely needs any maintenance. So it really is cheap.
