You sound like you have the fever so let me tell you a story an old timer told me in the early '90s. He said he, himself was talking to an old guy who liked to explore abandoned mines, like you, and he was out in central Nevada and came upon a mine that went in horizontally into the side of a hill in the middle of nowhere.
I'm guessing it was the 1940's or '50s but anyway he walked in for awhile and found a few things, an empty dynamite crate and so forth and continued farther in. Eventually the mine opened up a bit into a room and there in the corner was a cot with a skeleton laying on it. He said he got the hell out of there as fast as he could and never went back into another mine.
