http://www.wikihow.com/FishFishing can be as complicated as you want with $2000 rods and boats and electronic gadgets but you don't need all that. Don't be intimidated by it. You can catch fish with just fishing line and a hook
If you have any friends or family that are experienced anglers that would take the time to show you the basics that would be best.
If you don't have a fishing pole I suggest going to your local walmart if you're Canadian or American and picking up an Ugly Stik rod with a shakespeare spincasting reel. A good starter rod. They're a lot of bang for your buck and are really durable for what they are.
Tackle all depends on where you are, what you want to fish for, & how much you want to spend. My pops started me out with a spincaster, line, a hook, something between the bobber and hook to balance the weight called a split shot. Throw a glob of worms on and you'll usually catch something.
Knots aren't anything scary either. A few knots can pretty much do whatever you'd like them to.
Knots I use on a regular basis fishing with a regular pole and fly rods: (google how)
>Improved clinch knot>The palomar knot>The blood knot >Surgeons knot>The spider hitch knot As I said it can be as simple or as complicated as you'd like it to be
Always make sure you have the proper licensing and know the regulations and seasons before you go out
