A big camp knife is better than a hatchet in my opinion. The longer edge surface will stay sharp longer and makes it easier to use. They are more comfortable to use for detailed work like hunting or whittleing. A longer blade can span wider objects to cut. The thinner blade slices and penetrates better. If the knife is tough it can be used as a hammer with the pommel, spine or side of the blade.
A good large camp is a machete, hatchet and butcher knife at the same time. There is no such thing as a "batoning knife" batoning is something you can do with a knife, hatchet or froe.
