Less weight means better gas mileage.
Also only buy shit as you need it, get used gear from second hand stores. Spending less money upfront, and being resourceful means you can spend more money on fun shit.
I also invest in land use permits for WMA and I get hunting and fishing licenses. It goes a long way, allows unfettered use of state and federal lands, and it's cheap when it comes to feeding yourself. (You can smoke a few fish while hanging out in a WMA for a week and have tasty snacks)
