>>1410474We had a deer overpopulation problem for about 2 decades. The state allowed extra kills for hunters, but it didn't help enough. There was horrible die offs asa result. Then coyotes from the south started moving up. In 5 years you could hear 100s of coyote packs howling at any time during the day. Coyote hunters started hunting those, but couldn't curb them. Finally, the coyotes killed off enough fawns in those years to balance both populations. Now deer populations are "normal" and there's hardly any disease problems reported, if any this year. Coyotes are still heard, but only like 1-2 times a week. The whole thing took about 3 decades to play out properly and it has been stable like that for the past 10-15 years.
Back when the deer population was bad, you could drive around and spot over 500 deer in a single field, look to another field and count 250, another 400, and so on. It was crazy. One hunting season after the first big die off, I lost count around 100 carcasses on my property alone.
