Regardless of your feeling on cities it seems like most city dwellers are fairly good about cleaning up after themselves because the outdoors is such an "other'd" place. its like a distant sacred space, its somewhere that is journey'd to and appreciated for its status as a pristine space, even though they are generally pretty clueless about it.
for rural populations that are closer to it and surrounded by it, these areas are taken for granted and less romanticized. Litter, particularly large scale litter as opposed to incidentals, is far more predominan from people from the sticks. Soi-boy george can be criticized for many things but he is not the one leaving shot up propane tanks, kitchen appliances, old beater cars, tarps and mounds of beer bottles out in the bushes. I'm no lover of the city or its denizens but criticism where its due.
