Having been to this area, I have zero idea what would make someone think going off trail on a cliff infested mountain to reach a road is a better than just hiking down the road your car broke down on to reach a road that has plenty of traffic. If they reached Mormon point and found help, they would still be a couple hours from their car. It would have been 20 miles down the road they were on at the worst but people are out driving in there every day this time of year. I bet people drove past their car on the side of the road before rescuers found it.
