Anything you attach directly to the roof without mounting points is inevitably going to destroy part of your paint job and potentially dent the sheetmetal. If you cannot physically shoulder the boat you will also have to plan a little differently. If it's a play boat or something like 35lbs. then it's pretty easy to just tie it down with foam pads and lines running through the windows. Anything larger will require front and aft guide lines and something to hold it pretty securely so both the boat and the car don't become unstable. You can spring for a Thule or other aftermarket system with mounting brackets but they are expensive as hell. Canoes have to sit on the combing so you need 4 points of contact, kayaks vary depending on the design. A sit-inside and just sit upright on its edge but doesn't work combing-down. A sit-on-top is the easiest thing to haul in my opinion, it's just a big chunk of plastic.
