I know we all love LARPing on this board so this is a thread for exactly this.
If you decide one day to leave civilisation behind, where would you go, how would you live and how would you survive?
I live in Switzerland which is a very densely populated country, so escaping and living without being noticed by anyone doesn't sound like an easy task.
I'd go to the southern alps in Ticino though, there are some pretty empty valleys there and it's probably the least densely populated place in central Europe.
So, how would I live?
I'd take secluded shepherd trails to get into an empty side valley (already scouted out some). I'd probably build several semi-permanent shelters varying in height where i'd stay depending on the season. I'd stay higher up in summer and closer to the valley in the winter (in some valleys the people living there leave during the winter so they'd be empty).
How would I survive? I'd definitely try catching some fish in the plentiful rivers, there's also some small lakes as well, but I wouldn't rely on fishing to survive.
The Ticino area is blessed with masses of chestnut trees, so I'd try to collect as many as possible during fall and conserve them (I know how to do that).
Fall would definitely be an easy season, with all the stuff that's growing there. Hazelnuts, acorns, rosehip, sloe...I could even collect and dry stinging nettle seeds, those are very nutritious as well.
Mushrooms as well, those aren't very calorie-dense though.
If I can preserve enough food I should be able to make it through the winter and hopefully into late spring as well. I would eat the bulbs of wood garlic, the roots of dandelion and the rhizomes of cattail to get me through spring if I don't have anything left from fall.
Clean water wouldn't be an issue since the streams are very clean in the alps.
It honestly doesn't sound that hard to survive here. Places like Alaska would be much harder for example.
How would you do it?
