People get tricked on this because of movies. In movies they'll always hold the torch or lantern in front of themselves so that it lights up the actor's face for the camera. That's good for the movie so you can see the actor's performance, but not great for actually seeing things.
A hooded lantern would also help since you can hold it in front and just make sure the hood is between your eyes and the flame. Or you could use a bullseye lantern, that'll focus the light in one direction like a flashlight. Depends on the time period you're going for though.
