I don't actually use those magnesium things because I think they're a stupid and inefficient way to carry your tinder.
Pic related is my standard fire-starting kit. As you can see, I carry quite a bit of vaseline-soaked cotton balls, which not only catches a spark after one strike of flint, but will burn like a candle in your tinder nest; whereas the magnesium shavings just ignite like jet fuel and if they don't catch a flame to your tinder pile, you need to shave more of them. A pinch of vaseline-soaked cotton is all you need for most fires, and note that the chunk in the cap is about 4-6 pinches woth, so a film canister of it will last a really long time.
